Nancy Gilgoff – Ashtanga Workshop 1 with
Nancy Gilgoff
Nancy Gilgoff
Nancy began practicing Ashtanga Yoga over thirty years ago with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, in Mysore, India. As result of their long and close association, Nancy is able to teach with a style and touch that comes directly from Pattabhi Jois. When Nancy asked Jois how she should teach, he told her to “teach the way I taught you”—advice which she took to heart and continues to follow today.
Nancy’s studies, over the years, have also led her to other teachers, including Baba Hari Das and, for asana, instructors of Iyengar. In addition, she has and continues to pursue the dharma teachings of the Dalai Lama.
Nancy spends much of her time touring the United States, Europe, and Asia, teaching with a view to fostering loving-kindness and to sharing her love and experience of yoga.

Peter Connolly

Peter Connolly studied for BA, MA and PhD degrees in Comparative Religion and Philosophy at the University of Lancaster and a BSc in Psychology with the Open University. He has taught Indian religion and philosophy on BA and MA courses for over 30 years and has worked with various Yoga organisations throughout that time.
He is interested in how people go about constructing histories of yoga and the methods they use for making sense of yoga texts. He is also fascinated by all forms of altered states of consciousness and has trained in both Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and hypnosis, both of which offer an interesting perspective on the psychology of yoga.
His classes are well known for their clarity of exposition and informal style. His book: A Student’s Guide to the History and Philosophy of Yoga (Equinox, 2007), has been warmly received by yoga teachers and academics alike.

This day will explore the shift in Indian religious thought and practice between the Vedas and the Upanisads, concentrating on the changes from ritual to mystical spirituality, from living with ancestors after death to rebirth, and on the emergence of monistic philosophy. Contrasts and continuities with heretical movements such as Buddhism and Jainism will also be explored.
In the course of this investigation much of what you may have read or been told about the origins of yoga may well be challenged; so only sign up if you are prepared to engage in open-minded discussion and willing to change your views in the light of new evidence. Some preparatory reading will be required.

The Bhagavad Gita and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra are often presented as complementary texts which, whilst exhibiting a number of obvious differences, convey fundamentally similar teachings. In the course of the day Dr Peter Connolly will challenge this view and argue that the differences between these texts are profound and that they guide their students towards very different lifestyles.
Exploration will be through lectures and group (small and plenary) discussions. If you have a view on these matters then come and participate in our open-ended exploration. Participants should have some familiarity with both texts.
