Camyoga has an exciting year looking forward as we are hosting some of the world's best

ashtanga teachers.  Nancy Gilgoff, John Scott, and David Swenson will all be joining us in 2012.  These teachers are not to be missed. All three have long histories of study with the late Patthabi Jois. Gilgoff and Swenson are both largely responsible for spreading ashtanga to the west during the 1970's.

Nancy Gilgoffwill be here June 23 and 24 for Intensive

ashtanga workshops.  She travels all the way from Maui.   John Scott  joins us September 7 - 9 to bring us inward to a transformative practice.  David Swensonreturns to Camyoga November 28 for a fun-filled exploration of yoga.

Don't miss the chance to study and learn from these fabulous teachers and practitioners. You can find both led and mysore style ashtanga classes on the Camyoga schedule to guide you through the primary series.  We are aslo pleased to welcome Gunveer Muhandru as our newest ashtanga teacher.

Art Exhibition with Camyoga Student, Susi Watson

Camyoga is excited to be hosting an art exhibition by Susi Watson launching Saturday April 17 from 19:00 - 21:00 and lasting till April 24. In this art series, Remembering What We Know, Susi explores questions and insights that she has encountered over the past year, during her transition from America to the UK and her practice at CamYoga. 'Remembering what you know' is all about transformation, embracing change and following your dreams.

Many of us in Cambridge can relate to the transition of moving to a new place and taking up life in new surroundings. Camyoga itself has become a hub for transformation  and exploration into deeper self-knowledge.

The series is an opportunity for us to reflect on questions and images, in the hope that it may: - ignite an intention during practice - encourage nourishing conversation - inspire us to visualize our own questions, answers or ideas - further our own practice, whatever our passion may be.

Ashtanga in the New Year

Whether you dabble in  ashtanga or make it a daily practice, the primary series is a lifelong journey.  It unfolds day by day and piece by piece.  As a set series, the system allows for self-practice and a deep understanding of moving within.

"Practice and all is coming"

-Sri K. pattabhi Jois

Camyoga is a excited to welcome Alan O'leary for a weekend of ashtanga workshops in January. Alan teaches Italian Culture at Leeds University and yoga as a balance to his life.  He brings with him experience in the ashtanga intermediate series and from his time spent in the Shala in Mysore.

His first workshop will be on building strength and stamina in the Primary series and is open to ashtanga practitioners of all levels. The next day's workshop will be on making the second series more accessible.  Non-dogmatic in his approach, Alan will  dispel fear and help you find the ways to approach the primary and second series challenges with confidence and fun.

Alan will also be hosting our Camyoga social evening following his first workshop on Saturday January 21.  We will screen the film, "Guru" featuring the late Pattabhi Jois, and have a talk around the tradition of ashtanga yoga in Mysore.

Don't miss these great workshops and discussion.  Further your ashtanga practice and gain new insight into this tradition.

Camyoga at the London Yoga Show!

Yogis flocked to Louise Lloyd's and Mark Stevens' classes at the London Yoga show last weekend.  The vibe was upbeat as people from all over joined in the sharing of yoga.  Camyoga and Yogiwear were there all weekend spreading the word on Cambridge yoga!

Michael Gannon, having finished his amazing workshops at Camyoga, was there giving instruction on finding the ever elusive bandhas.  He demonstrated his bandhas at work with a pick up and lift into handstand!

An inspiring and intriguing collection of booths and retailers kept everyone milling about for the weekend. The Yogathon on Saturday had yogis doing sun salutations for nearly three hours!  Camyoga teacher training student Marion Poerio raised money for the rainforest with her yogathon contributions. Well done.

Look for Yogiwear's new collection in Camyoga coming soon. Looking forward to seeing everyone at next year's yoga show.

Hatha Yoga Pradipika with Andrea K.

Join Andrea this Saturday, August 27th,  for her next Jivamukti masterclass.  This 2 hour class from 10:00 - 12:00 will be inspired by the Hatha Yoga Pradipika.  This Yogic text covers topics such as asanas, pranayama, chakras, bandhas, kriyas, nadhis, and mudras.

Don't worry if you don't fancy yourself a yogic scholar.  Andrea's well rounded classes are dynamic, physical, inspired, and thoughtful.

Partner/Acrobatic Yoga Class Starting Soon...

Bring a partner or fly solo.  This class will blend yoga, acrobatics, and some therapeutic thai massage. Partnering in yoga can build trust, playfulness, and fun.  Find support in inversions, backbends, and stretches.  Also learn to spot, assist, and fly someone yourself.  Through alignment and technique flying can be comfortable and therapeutic for both parties.  Our resident man of steel, Howard, will be teaching you the ropes every Saturday at 16:00 starting July 30.

If you are curious, come check it out!  Many people will be new to this fun and exciting practice. Be prepared to play...

Camyoga Gets Sweaty

Camyoga got out and about this weekend...into the Sweaty Betty Shop window to be exact. We amazed some small children and tourists, while frightening other passers-by as they realized the mannequins were alive. It was a busy and beautiful afternoon in Cambridge market square and we did draw interest.

Yoga has definitely gone mainstream as it hits the High Street. And it's not just for sweaty betties...it's for sweaty boys too (you just won't find your kit at Sweaty Betty).

I wonder in what other crazy places yoga will crop up?

Turning the World on it's Head

This past weekend students turned their worlds‚ upside down...literally.  Beverley Nolan gave a master class on this master pose, headstand (salamba sirsasana). While the health benefits are vast, the pose can be daunting. Don't worry you are not the only one! Beverley broke down the alignment points and techniques needed for going upside down safely and with confidence.

Looking at the body's alignment before coming up in the pose is important to having a safe headstand. Beverley had students lying on the floor looking at the alignment of the body and the natural imbalances unique to each person. Students helped each other make small but crucial adjustments to their body's alignment. After some preparatory work, students were ready to engage their cores and come up into headstand with legs together.

Some Benefits of headstand are:

  • Calms the nervous system (relieves stress)
  • Regulates the pituitary and pineal glands (balances hormones)
  • Stimulates the brain with fresh oxygenated blood
  • Improves digestion
  • Builds strength in the arms, legs, and core

Headstand is a pose that takes time and practice to develop. If you missed the workshop, check out one of Beverley's Friday classes and fine tune your practice.

Namaste!
