when yoga meets art: a journey into creative release
why art belongs alongside yoga
Art doesn’t have to be about skill, technique, or producing something “beautiful.” In a mindful context, art becomes a language — a way of expressing sensation, emotion, and energy without needing words.
Charcoal, in particular, is a wonderfully honest medium. It’s raw, tactile, and forgiving. It invites bold gestures, smudges, and marks that reflect movement, breath, and feeling.
When paired with yoga:
movement softens the body and quiets the mind
breath creates rhythm and presence
art offers a channel for release and expression
Together, they create an experience that can help to support emotional wellbeing.
a simple mindful art exercise to try at home
You don’t need to be an artist - just curious. Here’s a short practice you can try before or after your yoga practice, or whenever you need to reset.
mindful mark-making practice (5–10 minutes)
you’ll need:
paper (any kind) and a pencil, charcoal, or pen
Sit comfortably and take 3 slow, steady breaths.
Close your eyes and notice how your body or mind feels right now - no judgement, just awareness.
Set a gentle intention, such as “I allow myself to express freely” or “I let go of what I don’t need.”
Begin making marks on the page, letting your hand move intuitively. Try not to plan or control the outcome.
Allow your breath to guide the movement — perhaps you’ll find slower breaths = slower marks, deeper breaths = bolder lines or something completely different
When you finish, pause and look at the page. Notice shapes, textures, and how you feel.
There’s no right or wrong here. The practice is in listening, not analysing.
This philosophy is at the heart of our upcoming workshop:
